HOSPITALITY<br />
<strong>Program</strong> <strong>Description</strong>: The Hospitality curriculum is designed to provide the skills<br />
and knowledge necessary for graduates to succeed in the hospitality management<br />
field. Practical applications of basic management theories and principles are<br />
stressed. Courses incorporate work-related experiences to simulate realistic management<br />
problems and opportunities.<br />
The Hospitality program is directed toward three groups of students. The first group is<br />
composed of students who currently work or desire to work in the hospitality industry who<br />
want to develop their careers in management. The second group includes students involved<br />
in fields outside the hospitality industry who desire new careers more suited to their personal<br />
interests. Students in other associate’s degree programs who desire a double major<br />
or an introduction to hospitality to complement their current major comprise the third<br />
g r o u p .<br />
Degree: Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.)<br />
Typical Job Opportunities: Organizations in the hospitality industry frequently<br />
promote from within. This practice makes the internship portion of the curriculum a<br />
significant asset.<br />
Position Titles at the First Level of Hospitality:<br />
Associate Manager. Manages shifts, operational divisions, and/or satellite units or<br />
facilities within a larger hospitality company upon completion of the company’s<br />
entry-level management trainee program.<br />
C rew Leader. Provides leadership to a work team in an individual area or segment of<br />
the hospitality company.<br />
Small-Business Operator. Operates or owns a franchise or individual hospitality<br />
b u s i n e s s .<br />
Assistant Manager. Manages shifts and units with franchised or multiple-companyowned<br />
hospitality units upon completion of management trainee duties.<br />
Functional Assistant Manager. Manages a specialized area such as accounting, marketing,<br />
maintenance or security within a hospitality org a n i z a t i o n .<br />
After successfully completing the Hospitality program, the graduate will be equipped to<br />
do the following:<br />
I . Understand the basic principles of hospitality and apply them within the<br />
hospitality profession<br />
I I . Integrate hospitality with other areas in the business environment<br />
I I I . Identify problems and use appropriate techniques to find solutions<br />
I V. Work independently with a network of individuals and also function within<br />
a work team<br />
V. Demonstrate basic collegiate skills that include competencies in mathematics,<br />
computer applications and communications<br />
V I . Comprehend the relationship of the hospitality industry with the role of the<br />
c o n s u m e r<br />
V I I . Continue developing skills as needed in the hospitality field<br />
V I I I .Qualify for entry-level management positions in the hospitality industry<br />
