Stephen Watt is an “innovation and commercialization manager” currently in residence<br />
at the Thebarton Precinct. Additionally, Steve has established his own company, Golden<br />
Haired Boy Multimedia, under the slogan “New Media Solutions for eBusiness”. Steve’s<br />
company is developing its first new media product, “DataShark” for commercial release<br />
in 2001.<br />
Chalisa Morrison was awarded the Premier’s Enterprise Scholarship for 2001. She is an<br />
Adelaide fashion designer who had the award winning 'innovative idea' to develop a<br />
specialized CAD s<strong>of</strong>tware system for the fashion design industry. Chalisa spent six<br />
months in Austin, Texas during 2001, as part <strong>of</strong> the PES program, researching and<br />
developing her ideas. As a result <strong>of</strong> her Austin experience, her once small idea has<br />
blossomed into a technology commercialization venture with much greater potential.<br />
In addition to BIG and the Premier's Enterprise Scholarship, the University also assists<br />
PhD candidates approaching the end <strong>of</strong> their candidacy with similar support to that<br />
outlined above.<br />
To date, across all three programs (including this years participants) the University will<br />
have assisted approximately 50 people commence almost 40 businesses. (Some <strong>of</strong> the<br />
applicants have formed teams).<br />
Facilitators<br />
University and City Policy<br />
• Criteria for occupancy at Thebarton Precinct are based upon a tenant’s ability to<br />
enter into a collaborative relationship with the University. This includes: cooperative<br />
education programs, joint research activities, and opportunities for student work<br />
experience.<br />
• The City <strong>of</strong> Charles Sturt has developed a Digital Precinct strategy entitled<br />
‘Switched On Hindmarsh’. This strategy includes: establishment <strong>of</strong> an integrated IT<br />
platform, providing high quality urban design and public infrastructure to upgrade the<br />
amenities <strong>of</strong> the District, and development <strong>of</strong> a marketing plan that provides a strong<br />
identity for the promotion <strong>of</strong> the area.<br />
Business Oriented Processes and Entrepreneurial Approaches<br />
• Thebarton programs have supported the establishment <strong>of</strong> over 40 new graduate<br />
businesses during the 1993-2001 period.<br />
• Thebarton has over 70 tenant groups comprising commercial enterprises, start-up<br />
companies, university research, and service groups.<br />
• Thebarton’s Graduate Entrepreneurial Program provides a physical and program<br />
base for developing student projects into new business enterprises.<br />
• Thebarton University hosts applied research activities including areas <strong>of</strong><br />
Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Occupational Heath, Electronics,<br />
and Laser Optics.<br />
• Commercial enterprises at the Thebarton Precinct include businesses involved in:<br />
materials engineering, biotechnology, laser optics technology, medical products,<br />
information technology, environmental sciences, and telecommunications among<br />
others.<br />
• The Exporters’ Club is located within the Digital Precinct. It is a Charles Sturt<br />
Council initiative with Port Adelaide/Enfield to assist small and medium size<br />
businesses to export.<br />
