Overview –<br />

Ratbag: (Greg) - CEO and c<strong>of</strong>ounder. Video gamers – American racing games: Dirt<br />
Track Racing – most sales come from the states – moved across to Playstation 2 with<br />
racing games. 60 staff – 7 in Sydney, also own motion capture studio where they<br />
capture movement. Make video games and have an action game along with a racing<br />
game coming out in December. Full time film director (with 20 yrs experience) full time<br />
screenwriter, and script editor (worked on the Matrix) storyboard artists, voice actors, for<br />
pushing the boundaries <strong>of</strong> game development.<br />
• Formed the company 8 years ago – took that long to get a contract<br />
• Never had any debt finance or venture capital<br />
• 4 yrs to American contract with $3M<br />
• They have employed xbox programmers. Have doubts about content – not<br />
compatible with the console market. They are a pc development company<br />
• Unemployment helped with getting started – wouldn’t let them do that now.<br />
“National employment incentive scheme’ was before. He was a lawyer. Business<br />
partner was a programmer<br />
• Startup marketing was to go to a trade show. Couldn’t sell game concept on<br />
paper kept plugging away and developed a prototype that was the best 3D game<br />
‘one the floor’ at the E3 conference. Technology and the art were very impressive<br />
• IP protection – have not bothered. Have copyright – no patent protection because<br />
the industry is so dynamic.<br />
• Initial stages, the business council paid for half <strong>of</strong> fees to go to trade show. They<br />
also helped with funding to staff and get equipment.<br />
• Resources: hard to find experienced game developers. They bring in 20% <strong>of</strong> their<br />
developers from overseas (England and the states). Takes about 6 months to<br />
become useful.<br />
• Programmers have computer science degrees. Two guys with PhDs in fluid<br />
dynamics<br />
• Illustrators, industrial designers, graphic designers. Now that they are getting into<br />
storyboarders.<br />
• Metal gear solid is a competitor product.<br />
• Some employees tried to spin out and try to start their own business, but their<br />
business practices didn’t help them to survive.<br />
• Great retention – no one has left in the last 2 years. People are very excited about<br />
what they are working on.<br />
• 18 months ago it was 15 employees. Put on 3 or 4 people a month. 63 Pirie St.<br />
