INTRODUCTION<br />
Paul Wiszniak, Senior Investment Manager, Information Industries <strong>of</strong> Invest South<br />
Australia hosted the session. He gave the current status <strong>of</strong> Invest SA, and also brought<br />
in local companies for case study analysis. There were common themes among the<br />
companies that are explored in this paper and used for analysis as a microenvironment<br />
for for increasing the rate <strong>of</strong> technological advancement within the <strong>Greater</strong> Adelaide<br />
Area .<br />
Background:<br />
• A lot <strong>of</strong> the start up companies are spinning out from DSTO (Defense Science<br />

• Department for Industry and Trade identifies and weans opportunities for<br />
investment in Adelaide<br />

• State has limited resources so they cannot focus resources on things that are<br />
already working<br />
• There is a primary focus on the growth sector<br />
• The state <strong>of</strong> South Australia tries to give companies non-financial incentives to<br />
locate in South Australia<br />
• There has been a primary focus on making attractive incentives to companies<br />
based on the strengths <strong>of</strong> the state<br />
• Ranking on the issues that are considered in locating a company:<br />

o Costs<br />
o People<br />
o Low Turn Over<br />
o Location<br />
o At #7 is the place to live consideration<br />
• Goals for the ICT Industry in SA<br />
o Trying to attract companies with IP that are interested in developing it<br />
