named Gort or Goirt, that is, ' EiJh-<br />

eann,' Ivy.<br />

When this letter is followed by one or more<br />

vowels, it sounds nearly like g, <strong>in</strong> gap,<br />

goose ; or ra<strong>the</strong>r, it is sounded harder than<br />

g, <strong>and</strong> not so hard as c. G, at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> a<br />

word, if preceded by one or more <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

vowels, or a liquid, sounds most frequently<br />

like k <strong>in</strong> roo/c, hook. Gli, before a, o, or u,<br />

have an aspir,Tted power to which <strong>the</strong>re is<br />

no correspondent sound <strong>in</strong> English ; but<br />

when followed by e, or i, <strong>the</strong>y sound like<br />

1/ <strong>in</strong> ye. Gh, at <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> words or sylla-<br />

bles is seldom pronounred, as Rigli, a k<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Riogkachd, a k<strong>in</strong>gdom.<br />
