one stream which is not dried up,<br />

Hydra. So long as streams were supplied<br />

from the main source, Herakles<br />

had still to struggle with the Hydra.<br />

His victory was not achieved until he<br />

had severed this neck which Hyper-<br />

mnestra refused to touch. The heads of<br />

the slain sons of Aigyptos are the heads<br />

which Herakles hewed off from the<br />

Hydra's neck : and thus this labour of<br />

Herakles resolves itself into the struggle<br />

of the sun with the streams of the earth,<br />

the conquest of which is of course the<br />

setting in of thorough drought.<br />
