SHORT CHRONICLE<br />
Repeated piracies in the Banggai archipelago and on the east coast of Celebes. Revius is<br />
sent there to take stock of the situation. He proposes to set up a station in the Salampe<br />
area of the Bay of Tomori.<br />
1851. C. Sluijter is inaugurated as sixth Resident of <strong>Ternate</strong> on February 12. 23<br />

Alleged claims by Boni to the possessions of the Sultan of <strong>Ternate</strong> in Banggai and<br />
Tobungku are dismissed by the Government as illegal.<br />

Bosscher on board, is sent to Banggai and Tobungku to inaugurate the newly appointed<br />
Rajahs and at the same time to look for a suitable place for an establishment (November).<br />
1853. The Vesuvius returns to <strong>Ternate</strong> (January), having failed to find a suitable<br />
place for an establishment since the Bay of Tomori consists of marsh and steep rocks. 24<br />
Repeated reports concerning pirates in Moluccan waters (December).<br />
1854. The ports of Ambon, Banda, <strong>Ternate</strong>, and Kayeli are opened for free trade. 25<br />
Severe fevers resulting in death rage almost the whole year throughout the islands as far<br />
as New Guinea.<br />
1855. Pirates penetrate as far as Makian, Moti, and Mare, kidnapping many people<br />
and burning several villages (May).<br />
