result, de Vlaming burned down several villages. Terbile was extradited and beheaded at<br />

Ambon—the event is depicted in an engraving by Valentijn (1724, Ib:302). The population<br />

was subjugated, and during a second journey in 1653 de Vlaming was able to persuade the<br />

friendly headmen to cut down the superfluous clove trees. From what Valentijn reported<br />

about this (pp. 300 and 305), de Vlaming seems to have stayed only on Sulabesi.<br />

The first contract was concluded with Sula in 1652 and a second was concluded<br />

November 23, 1681. Under the terms of the contract, sufficient acknowledgment is made of<br />

the sovereignty of the Company (cf. Weddik).<br />

Because of its remoteness, in former days this area was a favorite hiding place for<br />

pirates who had crossed over from the Obi Islands. The present era is a more peaceful time<br />

for the native population. The appointment of a post holder at Sanana has caused<br />

restrictions to be placed on all unruly behavior. This official is always consulted when<br />

smaller offences are adjudicated and few actions are taken without his knowledge. [p. 123]<br />
