kapiten; kapiten-laut (the native kapita has become kapiten), the highest authority after the<br />

Sultan, whose duties correspond with those of sahbandar in the Malay countries; only the<br />

nobles, usually close relatives of the Sultan, are appointed.<br />

There are also captains in the company of the Sultan, and the Head of the Makassarese also<br />

holds the titular rank of captain in the citizen soldiery.<br />

kaporal, corporal; corrupt form of the Dutch korporaal.<br />

karamat, holy grave, holy place (from Arabic).<br />

<strong>Ternate</strong>. In the text it is indicated as a place of exile, since it has long been the custom to exile<br />

people who misbehaved on <strong>Ternate</strong> to Halmahera.<br />
