Saturday, March 7. Together with the Captain of H.M. corvette Nihalenia, I paid a<br />

visit to the Sultan of <strong>Ternate</strong> in the late afternoon.<br />

Only a few light shocks were felt during the day.<br />

Sunday, March 8. A delegation of inhabitants, on behalf of the Sultan of <strong>Ternate</strong>,<br />

boarded the Nihalenia to thank the captain for assistance rendered. In the evening the<br />

Sultan of <strong>Ternate</strong> paid a visit to the captain of H.M. corvette Nihalenia, for a farewell visit.<br />

Light shocks were felt last night and during the day.<br />

Monday, March 9. H.M. corvette Nihalenia sailed at ten o’clock this morning, its<br />

destination Java. No shocks were felt during the night.<br />

Ceremonial at the Laying to Rest of the Sultan of <strong>Ternate</strong><br />

Monday, December 13, 1751. On this day appointed for the burial of the dead body<br />

of the deceased King of <strong>Ternate</strong>, His Highness Amerie Iskander Diul Carnaine Siafuedin<br />

Kitchel Raja Lauwt, His Excellency the Governor and Members of the Political Council,<br />

with the exception of the Major and Head of the Militia Christoffel Triskas, who had been<br />

nominated by their Lordships to guard the castle, went to the <strong>Ternate</strong>se Court, having been<br />

called by:<br />

Gugugu Pati Saranga<br />

Hukum Soasio Harrun<br />

Hukum Samaiya<br />

Sangaji Limatauw Maudi<br />

Quimelaha [sic] Tomagola Papulua<br />

They were accompanied by Members of the Judiciary and a few more lesser people.<br />

They arrived at the court at three o’clock in the afternoon, offered their condolences to the<br />

princes, princesses, and relatives of the King, and then stayed for some time. Amidst the<br />

weeping of several women and the singing of a number of Moorish priests, the dead body of<br />

His Highness was borne outside the palace by the closest Princes of the blood royal. The<br />

body, wrapped in white linen and covered with several pieces of gold-colored material,<br />

sheets, and two silk and two ordinary quitasols, was laid in a coffin. This was placed on a<br />

litter made of bamboo, over which there was a canopy of silk (as though for a four-poster<br />

bed) with many-colored flounces overlaid with double eagles of beaten silver and other<br />

ornaments. [p. 347] Massive gold chains had been hung from all sides. The King’s<br />

concubines and several of his female indoor servants, dressed in mourning, their heads<br />
