TERNATE THE TERNATESE LANGUAGE<br />

Heku or Hiku, the name of a large kampong, in the Sultan’s territory on <strong>Ternate</strong>, to which<br />

twelve smaller kampongs belong.<br />

helah: helah kaki, to place the two feet together when greeting someone, sometimes lifting<br />

one leg slightly while doing this (from Malay).<br />

hele, to step, walk.<br />

hemah, seat for rowers in a proa; oti ma-hemah ngasio, a proa with seats for nine oarsmen.<br />

henah, the pinang tree, Areca catechu L.; its nut is used when chewing betel (moku).<br />

herah, keel of a vessel; oti ma-herah, outrigger proa if only consisting of the bottom-piece<br />

without the sides being raised.<br />

heran, surprised (from Arabic).<br />

hida, to look; ohida ika, he looked in that direction.<br />

hiku, to hide, conceal; mahiku, to instruct someone to hide or conceal something.<br />

himo, old, opposite of young; mahimo, a title for elders, position under the head of the<br />

kampong.<br />

himo-himo, old people, usually ancestors.<br />

hio: mahio, to blow, whistle.<br />

hirah: 1. to lose, disappear, be lost; sihohirah, to make disappear. 2. hirah-birah, close<br />

relations, one’s own brother and sister.<br />

hiri, to catch, take in.<br />

hiri harah, the Malay huruhara.<br />

hisa, hedge, fence.<br />

hitu, kitchen, cooking place.<br />

hobu, swelling of injured spot, lump.<br />

hodo, 1. to water; mahodo, to sprinkle water on oneself near a well. 2. father-in-law.<br />

hodu, do not want.<br />

hohe, to laugh.<br />

hohoro, boil (blood blister?).<br />

hohu, foot, paw; mejah ma-hohu, the legs of the table.<br />

hoi, to take off, divest oneself of; mahoi, to move house; mai jou kolano hodu mahoi, the ruler<br />

did not want to move.<br />

hoko, to burn.<br />
