1982). In West Africa, stone sculptures were carved from steatite, granite, gneiss,<br />

basalt, limestone, and sandstone (Allison 1968).<br />

From the variety of rocks used for carv<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g many considered very hard<br />

rocks, it can be seen that sculptors were able to utilize local or regional material <strong>in</strong><br />

nearly all cases.
