sure that his age was thirty-nine, and he believed<br />
that he had been born in 1944 or 1945; but it was<br />
never possible nowadays to pin down any date<br />
within a year or two.<br />
For whom, it sud<strong>de</strong>nly occurred to him to<br />
won<strong>de</strong>r, was he writing this diary? For the future,<br />
for the unborn. His mind hovered for a moment<br />
round the doubtful date on the page, and then<br />
fetched up with a bump against the Newspeak<br />
word DOUBLETHINK. For the first time the<br />
magnitu<strong>de</strong> of what he had un<strong>de</strong>rtaken came home<br />
to him. How could you communicate with the<br />
future? It was of its nature impossible. Either the<br />
future would resemble the present, in which case<br />
it would not listen to him: or it would be different<br />
from it, and his predicament would be<br />
meaningless.<br />
For some time he sat gazing stupidly at the paper.<br />
The telescreen had changed over to stri<strong>de</strong>nt<br />
military music. It was curious that he seemed not<br />
merely to have lost the power of expressing<br />
himself, but even to have forgotten what it was<br />
that he had originally inten<strong>de</strong>d to say. For weeks<br />
past he had been making ready for this moment,<br />
and it had never crossed his mind that anything<br />
would be nee<strong>de</strong>d except courage. The actual<br />
writing would be easy. All he had to do was to<br />
transfer to paper the interminable restless<br />
monologue that had been running insi<strong>de</strong> his head,<br />
literally for years. At this moment, however,<br />
even the monologue had dried up. Moreover his<br />
varicose ulcer had begun itching unbearably. He<br />
dared not scratch it, because if he did so it always<br />
became inflamed. The seconds were ticking by.<br />
He was conscious of nothing except the<br />
blankness of the page in front of him, the itching<br />
of the skin above his ankle, the blaring of the<br />
music, and a slight booziness caused by the gin.<br />
Sud<strong>de</strong>nly he began writing in sheer panic, only<br />
imperfectly aware of what he was setting down.<br />
His small but childish handwriting straggled up<br />

neolingüística doblepensar. Por primera vez<br />
comprendió la magnitud <strong>de</strong> lo que se proponía<br />
hacer. ¿Cómo iba a comunicar con el futuro? Esto<br />
era imposible por su misma naturaleza. Una <strong>de</strong> dos:<br />
o el futuro se parecía al presente y entonces no le<br />
haría ningún caso, o sería una cosa distinta y, en tal<br />
caso, lo que él dijera carecería <strong>de</strong> todo sentido para<br />
ese futuro.<br />
Durante algún tiempo permaneció contemplando<br />
estúpidamente el papel. La telepantalla transmitía<br />
ahora estri<strong>de</strong>nte música militar. Es curioso: Winston<br />
no sólo parecía haber perdido la facultad <strong>de</strong><br />
expresarse, sino haber olvidado <strong>de</strong> qué iba a<br />
ocuparse. Por espacio <strong>de</strong> varias semanas se había<br />
estado preparando para este momento y no se le<br />
había ocurrido pensar que para realizar esa tarea se<br />
necesitara algo más que atrevimiento. El hecho<br />
mismo <strong>de</strong> expresarse por escrito, creía él, le sería<br />
muy fácil. Sólo tenía que trasladar al papel el<br />
interminable e inquieto monólogo que <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> hacia<br />
muchos años venía corriéndose por la cabeza. Sin<br />
embargo, en este momento hasta el monólogo se le<br />
había secado. A<strong>de</strong>más, sus varices habían empezado<br />
a escocerle insoportablemente. No se atrevía a<br />
rascarse porque siempre que lo hacía se le<br />
inflamaba aquello. Transcurrían los segundos y él<br />
sólo tenía conciencia <strong>de</strong> la blancura <strong>de</strong>l papel ante<br />
sus ojos, el absoluto vacío <strong>de</strong> esta blancura, el<br />
escozor <strong>de</strong> la piel sobre el tobillo, el estruendo <strong>de</strong> la<br />
música militar, y una leve sensación <strong>de</strong><br />
atontamiento producido por la ginebra.<br />
De repente, empezó a escribir con gran rapi<strong>de</strong>z,<br />
como si lo impulsara el pánico, dándose apenas<br />
cuenta <strong>de</strong> lo que escribía. Con su letrita infantil iba<br />
