The number of trailers and containers moved by r&roads has increased more than four-fold<br />

from 1965 to 1998. Containerization has increased in recent years, evidenced by the 135%<br />

increase in the number qf containers from 1988 to 1997. According to the 1997 Commodity<br />

Flow Survey, 5% of all freight ton-miles are rail intermodal shipments (trucldrail or<br />

rail/water). See Table 8. I1 <strong>for</strong> details.<br />
