1. BACKGROUND<br />

This Program involves ef<strong>for</strong>ts to collect, analyze, and archive data and<br />

in<strong>for</strong>mation related to heavy-truck operation in real-world highway environments.<br />

Such data and in<strong>for</strong>mation will be useful to support technology evaluation ef<strong>for</strong>ts<br />

and provide a means of accounting <strong>for</strong> real-world driving per<strong>for</strong>mance within<br />

heavy truck analyses. The Program is being led by the Oak Ridge National<br />

Laboratory, will involve two industry partners (Dana Corporation of Kalamazoo,<br />

MI and Michelin Tire of Greenville, SC), and will have support from the Argonne<br />

National Laboratory (ANL) with regard to this projects relationship with PSAT<br />

development and evaluation. Both industry partners are interested in the vehicle<br />

dynamics <strong>for</strong> real-world applications in order to validate their computer simulation<br />

models of the truck’s axles, tire per<strong>for</strong>mance, and tire-road interface. In addition,<br />

Michelin remains interested in gathering data on the long-term real-world<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance of their New-Generation Single Wide-Based Tires (NGSWBT) –<br />

especially with regard to the fuel savings aspect of NGSWBTs.<br />

The overall Program consists of three phases:<br />
