Statistical calibration is the process of predicting partially observed covariate values,
$x$, from outcome data $y$. Here we discuss the calibration procedure in view of
current reconstruction methods. In particular, we show that current methods can be
viewed as particular forms of a hierarchical model. We explore the implications of
such assumptions on reconstructions of climate and explore the sensitivity of the
reconstructions when these assumptions are relaxed.
