Skill of climate field reconstruction methods in the context of
optimal interpolation estimates
Well-known pseudoproxy tests that were previously used for such methods of climate
field reconstruction as Regularized Expectation-Minimization (RegEM) and
Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) are now repeated for Optimal Interpolation
and its reduced space approximation (RSOI). The actual RSOI skill and the reliability
of its theoretical error estimates for reconstructed values are evaluated. Their
dependence on the observational network, length of the calibration period and the
homogeneity of “true” climate record are analyzed. These results are then used for the
interpretation of the skill exhibited by RegEM and CCA.
