4.7. SUMMARY<br />

In the stages of analysis and generation, most MT systems contain separated components<br />

dealing with different levels of linguistic description: morphology, syntax, semantics.<br />

Hence, analysis may be divided in<strong>to</strong> morphological analysis, syntactic analysis and se-<br />

mantic analysis (Hutchins and Somers 1992).<br />

For the purposes of this study, our proposed solution <strong>to</strong> an <strong>Arabic</strong>-<strong>English</strong> transla<strong>to</strong>r will<br />

be based upon the interlingua model of <strong>machine</strong> translation. <strong>Arabic</strong> is unique in many<br />

ways but is not immune <strong>to</strong> the standard challenges faced by other languages such as<br />

multiple meanings of words, non-verbalisation and insufficient lexicons.<br />

An Interlingua model that incorporates source language analysis, thereby creating a so<br />

called universal logical structure, will facilitate multiple language generation in a more<br />

flexible way. An Interlingua model is presented in Figure 4.10.<br />
