7. Louis Polain, 1866—1934, then a young man about Otlet's age was<br />

eventually responsible for the still standard Catalogue des livres imprimis<br />

au quinzietne siecle des bibliotheques publiques de Belgique (Bruxelles:<br />

La Societe des bibliophiles et iconophiles de Belgique, 1932). In<br />

1909 he edited from her manuscript the second volume of Marie Pellechet's<br />

Catalogue general des incunables des bibliotheques publiques de-<br />

France (Paris: A. iPicard et fils, 1897^1909).<br />

11. Henri Stein, 1862—1940, had become by the last years of the century a<br />

highly respected bibliographer. He had reported to the Congres Bibliographique<br />

International in 1888 on the progress of bibliography since<br />

the previous conference in 1876, and in 1897 his large Manuel de Bibliographie<br />

Generate (Paris: A. Picard et fils, 1897) appeared. It wassubsequently<br />

reprinted in 19G2. In 1927 he took over the editorship of<br />

the Catalogue Generate de la Librairie Francaise, vols. 29—32 for the<br />

years 1919—1925. Most of his working life was spent in the Archives<br />

iNationales. He founded and edited Le Bibliographe moderne and founded<br />

the .Societe Francaise de Bibliographie. He also collaborated with<br />

the man to become his chief in the Archives Nationales, C. V. Langlois.<br />

15. Franz Funck-Brentano, 1862—1947, had studied in the famous Ecole des<br />

Chartes. He became Librarian of the Arsenal Library where he edited the<br />

catalogue of the archives of the Bastille and wrote a number of historical<br />

works. His article «L'Office International de Bibliographie et La<br />

Classification Decimale» in Correspondence historique et archeologique,<br />

III ('1806), 40 pp. was reproduced in a number of other journals (see<br />

IIB Bulletin, I i(1895—6), 271).<br />

16. Leopold Delisle, «Decimal Classification and Relative Index for Libraries...,<br />

premier article*, Journal des Savants, Ii896, p. 161. Leopold—<br />

Victor^Delisle, 1826—4910, studied at the Ecole des Chartes and began<br />

his professional career as an archivist. After a period of rapid'<br />

promotion he became Administrator-General of the Bibliotheque<br />

Nationale in 1874, a post he held for more than thirty years. He was responsible<br />

for the decision to print the iBibliotheque National's catalogue,,<br />

the first volume of which appeared in 1897, the last volume of which is<br />

still awaited. He was elected to the Institut de France at the age of 31.<br />

17. Leon Losseau to Otlet, 29 January 1907, Dossier No. 256, «Losseau»,.<br />

Mundaneum. Only sweeten Stein with «a few flowers, a little holy waters,<br />

said Losseau, and Otlet might «have a second edition of the second<br />

article of Delisle».<br />

18. Sury of the OIB wrote to Otlet, 17 July 1896, that he had refused a young<br />

man an introduction to Delisle from the Institute because he suspected<br />

«Delisle and others at the Bibliotheque iNationale were not absolutely favourable<br />

to us». !The young man, thought Sury, would be better advised<br />

to obtain a (letter from one of his professors. «Moreover, I would like to<br />

observe that M. Delisle... would have great sport with this adolescent<br />
