American zoologist who had become increasingly interested in the bibliographical<br />

problems posed by zoological literature. He set up the Concilium<br />

Bibliographicum in Zurich in 1895. Its main purpose was the<br />

publication on cards of bibliographical notices. Field was a firm believer<br />

in the value of the Dewey Decimal Classification and after 1895<br />

participated closely in its expansion by the IIB.<br />
