American zoologist who had become increasingly interested in the bibliographical
problems posed by zoological literature. He set up the Concilium
Bibliographicum in Zurich in 1895. Its main purpose was the
publication on cards of bibliographical notices. Field was a firm believer
in the value of the Dewey Decimal Classification and after 1895
participated closely in its expansion by the IIB.
