The question is however often asked, whether all managers should rate high on achievement<br />
motivation. People who do rate high tend to advance faster than those who do not. But because<br />
so much of managing requires other characteristics besides achievement drive, every company<br />
should probably have many managers who, while possessing fairly strong achievement<br />
motivation, also have a high need for affiliation. This latter need is important for working with<br />
people and for coordinating the efforts of individuals working in groups.<br />

5.0 CONCLUSION<br />
The study of motivation is indeed concerned, basically, with why people behave in a particular or<br />
certain way. In general terms it is concerned with why people choose a particular cause of action<br />
in preference to others, and why they continue with a chosen action, often over a long period, and<br />
in the face of difficulties and problems. Generally speaking, writers who have thought and written<br />
about motivation have considered two distinct but interrelated sets of ideas: content theories and<br />
process theories. This unit discussed on the content theories of motivation including the Human<br />
resources model, The theory X and Y Maslow’s hierarchy of needs model; Alderfers modified<br />
need hierarchy theory and Herzberg’s two – factor theory.<br />
6.0 SUMMARY<br />
Good motivation is central to the effective management of people. Motivation is one part of the<br />
managerial function of directing. Broadly defined, motivation is the set of forces that cause<br />
people to behave in certain ways. A motive is a need or desire within a person to achieve some<br />
goals or objective and understanding human motivation is a complex matter with no precise<br />
answers. Although the causes of motivation are not perfectly understood, the results of having<br />
motivated people in an organization are obvious and highly beneficial. As a consequence,<br />
managers have tried to understand the conditions and influences that motivate people so that they<br />
