In every organization, there exists some positions and responsibilities arising from the operations<br />

associated with the mission, goals and objectives for the existence of the organization. The formal<br />

distribution of tasks, the definition of authority and responsibility and the relationship between<br />

members of the organisation is usually established on the basis of an organizational structure.<br />

Organization may exists on a small scale basis, which can allow the distribution of authority and<br />

responsibilities on somehow informal basis. However, as the organization grows, with increasing<br />

size, there is greater need for a carefully designed and purposeful form of organizational structure.<br />

This calls for the entrenchment of a formal structure. The structure cannot, in most cases, be held<br />

sancrosanct in all operational situations.<br />

Hence, there is also need for a continual review of the structure to ensure that it is the most<br />

appropriate form for a particular organizational development, and in keeping with the dictates of<br />

both the internal and external environment.<br />

In this study unit, therefore, you will be taken through the general overview of the field of<br />

organizational behaviour.<br />

2.0 OBJECTIVES<br />

At the end of this unit, you should be to:<br />

3. mention and discuss dimensions of people-organization relationship<br />

3.1.1 MEANING OF ORGANSATION STRUCTURE<br />

According to Mullins (2000), structure is the pattern of relationships along positions in the<br />

organisation and among members of the organisation. The purpose of structure is the division of<br />
