Technological Change: Everyone is keenly aware that the rate of technology change is<br />
greater than it has ever been. It is affecting the nature of jobs at all levels and in all types of<br />
organizations.<br />
The Knowledge Explosion: The amount of knowledge is an accelerated path. There has<br />
been a transition from an agricultural to an industrial to now knowledge – based society<br />
especially in the advanced societies.<br />
Product and Service Obsolescence: Although some industries worse in this respect than<br />
others, the product life cycle is getting shorter and shorter. Textile products, electronics,<br />
pharmaceutical products.<br />
Social Change: This involves a change in social attitudes, behaviours, values and belief<br />
and composition of the people particularly as this affects their attitude to and even survive,<br />
organizations must meet the tremendous challenges presented by all the areas of change.<br />
Neither private nor public organizations can compete in today’s market place by standing<br />
or going backward. This type of business change generally involves organization<br />
adjustment.<br />
Other extraneous external sources of change that can be listed include;<br />
a. consumer needs or taste<br />
b. distribution channel<br />
c. shortened change in the product life cycle<br />
d. shortages of raw materials<br />
e. change in management itself for example a change in board of Directors<br />
f. International monetary policy<br />
g. Natural disaster like flood, earthquake, tsunamis, volcanic eruption etc.<br />
h. Political instability<br />
i. Expectations of the people<br />
The internal forces of change can take the shape of;<br />
a. New managerial policies<br />
b. Conflict within the organization<br />
c. Change in management itself with their peculiar philosophies of leadership styles.<br />
