dissatisfaction) than payment provides of satisfaction. Such payments may then become a<br />
nuisance to the organization.<br />
3. The manager will need to use judgement in rewarding behaviour by a variety of means.<br />
Too small a sum of money may be seen as an insult and act as demotivator, just as too<br />
large a sum could also reduce the manager’s control.<br />
4. Payment may be subject to contractual limits, for individuals and for groups. Payment may<br />
thus be improper just as they may be inappropriate. This would be the case, for example, if<br />
they fall outside a wage agreement.<br />
5. Equity between members of the group may be difficult to preserve. Moreover, a given<br />
amount of money may be perceived differently by each person so that it is not obvious<br />
now mush effect the reward will have on each recipient.<br />
6 Where the individual is likely to go through a tax barrier, then the motivation goes, as in<br />
coal mining, where high wages cause absenteeism to minimize tax payments.<br />
In short, money may well be a powerful motivator. It is certainly a major reason for working. But<br />
when it comes to signaling satisfaction or dissatisfaction, the massage may be more appropriately<br />
communicated in other ways.<br />
3.2 WHY DO PEOPLE WORK<br />
The question, why do people works qualify for varied and multiple answers. Generally the<br />
significance of work to an individual will depend on a number of variables. But historically two<br />
opposing attitudes toward work have been held by employees;<br />
1. Work is a means to an end. It is usually unpleasant, but we must work to reach the ends we<br />
desire and pay our living cost. In other words, it is a way of obtaining the necessary<br />
income require to live a valued way of life hence it is accentual life interest.<br />
2. Work is an end in itself and is very satisfying. A person gains fulfillment through work.<br />
Comparisons of labour forces attitude to work in different countries shows that, for example in the<br />
USA, Israel etc. work itself is a cherished value. In 1971 president Nixon stated.<br />
