4.5 Connecting User-Supplied PC to Robot
The <strong>Adept</strong> <strong>Cobra</strong> <strong>i600</strong>/i800 robots must be connected to a user-supplied PC for setup,
control, and programming. The user loads the <strong>Adept</strong> DeskTop software onto the PC and
connects it to the robot via an RS-232 serial cable.
PC Requirements
In order to use <strong>Adept</strong> DeskTop software, your PC should be configured with:
• IBM-<strong>com</strong>patible PC with a Pentium-II 400 Mhz or higher processor
• Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 6a or later), Windows 2000 (Service
Pack 3 or later) or Windows XP (Service Pack 1 or later) operating system
• 500 MB hard disk (re<strong>com</strong>mended minimum)
• Minimum of 128 MB RAM (more memory may be required to run Windows NT or
Windows 2000/XP)
•SVGA monitor
•CD-ROM drive
• For the serial option, a standard, null modem, shielded, RS-232 data transfer serial
cable, DB-9 female connectors on both ends (supplied by <strong>Adept</strong>).
Installing Serial Cable
1. Locate the RS-232 null modem serial cable that is included in the Accessory Box.
2. Connect one end of the serial cable to the RS-232 connector on the robot interface
panel. See Figure 4-1 on page 35.
3. Connect the other end of the cable to a serial port on the PC. Serial ports are often
known as COM ports.
