<strong>Draft</strong> resolution for <strong>UNESCO</strong> Institute for Statistics<br />

(UIS)<br />

The <strong>General</strong> <strong>Conference</strong>,<br />

Taking note of the reports of the Governing Board of the <strong>UNESCO</strong> Institute for Statistics (UIS) for 2010<br />

and 2011,<br />

Аlso taking note of the Medium-Term Strategy for 2008-2013 of the <strong>UNESCO</strong> Institute for Statistics,<br />

1. Requests the Governing Board of the <strong>UNESCO</strong> Institute for Statistics to focus the Institute’s<br />

programme on the following priorities, with special emphasis on the needs of Africa, gender equality,<br />

youth, LDCs and SIDS as well as the most vulnerable segments of society, including indigenous<br />

peoples to:<br />

(d)<br />

(e)<br />

(f)<br />

improve the relevance and quality of <strong>UNESCO</strong>’s international database by developing<br />

new statistical concepts, methodologies and standards in education, science, culture and<br />

communication, by promoting the collection and production of quality statistics and indicators<br />

in a timely manner, and by strengthening communication with Member States and cooperation<br />

with field offices and partner agencies and networks;<br />

continue to support Member States and build their capacities in developing national strategies<br />

through conducting training in data collection and use, dissemination of technical guidelines<br />

and tools, and through the provision of expert advice and support to in-country statistical<br />

activities;<br />

support the development of policy analysis in Member States by: training in analysis, conducting<br />

analytical studies in partnership with international specialists, disseminating best practices and<br />

analytical reports to a wide audience; and by regularly reporting on the dissemination and use<br />

of UIS statistics;<br />

strengthen the position of the <strong>UNESCO</strong> Institute for Statistics within the international statistical<br />

landscape by looking for and/or intensifying cooperation with other relevant international<br />

organizations, including the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development<br />

(OECD) and the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat);<br />

address the issue of education quality and the related increasing importance of assessing<br />

learning outcomes by consolidating its clearinghouse role in this field, promoting cooperation<br />

and convergence among existing international initiatives regarding student assessment, and<br />

expanding the implementation of the Literacy Assessment and Monitoring Programme<br />

(LAMP) in new countries as well as presenting the results from the participating countries;<br />

implement the revised International Standard Classification of Education (ISCED) subject to<br />

approval by the <strong>General</strong> <strong>Conference</strong>;<br />

2. Authorizes the Director-<strong>General</strong> to support the <strong>UNESCO</strong> Institute for Statistics by providing a<br />

financial allocation of $9,<strong>36</strong>9,200;<br />
