<strong>Draft</strong> resolution for External relations<br />

and public information<br />

The <strong>General</strong> <strong>Conference</strong><br />

1. Requests the Director-<strong>General</strong> to examine ways and means to further rationalize the financial<br />

resources allocated to Part II.B.5 of document <strong>36</strong> C/5 Approved, while striking a necessary balance<br />

between the means to strengthen cooperation with institutional partners and official cooperation<br />

networks and those required to increase the visibility of these actions. Therefore, she is invited to<br />

optimize, as far as possible, the use of available resources, by increasing the efficiency of current<br />

services, by reducing expenditures related to travel and contractual services and to report to the<br />

governing bodies periodically on potential cost savings in the above-mentioned areas;<br />

2. Authorizes the Director-<strong>General</strong>:<br />

(a)<br />

to implement the plan of action in order to:<br />

(i)<br />

strengthen relations with Member States and Associate Members by, inter alia:<br />

• cooperating closely with Permanent Delegations to <strong>UNESCO</strong> and the established<br />

groups of Member States at <strong>UNESCO</strong>, as well as with the established subregional<br />

and regional organizations with which <strong>UNESCO</strong> has a legal relationship;<br />

• ensuring the effective preparation and follow-up of official visits;<br />

• helping to prioritize <strong>UNESCO</strong>’s actions in Member States and Associate Members;<br />

• promoting universal membership of the Organization;<br />

• planning general or thematic information meetings with Permanent Delegates;<br />

• preparing the Director-<strong>General</strong>’s official travel to Member States in an optimal<br />

manner;<br />

• updating the website database of country profiles regarding cooperation with<br />

<strong>UNESCO</strong>;<br />

(ii)<br />

reaffirm the profile and core competences of <strong>UNESCO</strong> in the United Nations system<br />

and reinforce cooperation with other intergovernmental organizations by, inter alia:<br />

• monitoring and analysing important developments in these bodies;<br />

• coordinating the contributions to documents and reports, and to inter-agency and<br />

intergovernmental meetings;<br />

• ensuring the monitoring and implementation of formal agreements;<br />

(iii)<br />

enhance the role and capacity of National Commissions and develop partnerships with<br />

associated networks by, inter alia:<br />

• increasing cooperation with National Commissions;<br />

• promoting bilateral, subregional, regional and interregional cooperation among<br />

National Commissions;<br />
