0421 Electrical Engineering
ЕСТS credits: 8
Weekly classes: 3lec+1sem+0labs+2ps+2cw
Assessment: exam
Type of exam: written and oral
Departments involved:
Department of Theoretic and Measuring Electrical Engineering
Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation
Lecturers:
Assoc. Prof. Tanya Metodieva Stoianova, MEng, PhD, Dept. of Theoretic and Measuring Engineering,
Abstract:
The Theoretic Electrical Engineering course familiarizes the students with the bases of electromagnetism and with
the main methods for analysis of settled and transient processes in linear electric chains, in a chain with
distributed parameters and in non-linear electric chains. The acquired knowledge is a basis for all electrical
courses.
Course content:
Bases of electromagnetism – electric field and magnetic field; Maxwell’s equations; scalar and vector potential;
constant and alternating electric and magnetic fields; potential fields; transforming the energy.
Settled modes in linear electric chains – main concepts and laps; constant, sine, periodic non-sine modes; threephase
chains; quadripoles.
Transient processes in linear electric chains - introduction; methods for analysis.
Chains with distributed parameters - main concepts; homogeneous line; line with no losses.
Non-linear electric chains - constant and periodic modes; transient processes.
Teaching and assessment:
Lectures present the teaching material according to the syllabus. At the seminar students solve problems covering
the topics of the syllabus. The continuous assessment is conducted at the practical exercises by an oral
discussion and submission of reports. At the beginning of the semester each student is given an individual
problem as a course work. It has to be presented at the end of the semester in written form and is defended orally.
Final assessment is accomplished by an exam, conducted in written and oral form.
Abstract:
The Electric measurements course aims at familiarising the students with the main methods and tools for studying
electric chains and for processing measurement results. The main attention is focused on the structure of
measuring tools for measuring current and voltage, parameters of electric chains, basic tools for measurement in
computer engineering and electronics - digital frequency meters, oscilloscopes.
Course content:
Processing of measurement results. Structure of measuring tools for measuring current and voltage. Measuring
parameters of electric chains. Measuring electric power and energy. Basic measuring tools in computer
engineering and electronics. Measurement interfaces.
Teaching and assessment:
Lectures last two hours and are conducted once a week. The exercises are two hours. They are connected with
the lectures and consolidate and deepen students’ knowledge on specific topics. Two planned tests are
administered during the semester.
