3076 Design Technology
ECTS credits: 5
Weekly classes: 2lec+0sem+0labs+2ps+2cw
Assessment: continuous assessment
Type of exam: written
Department involved:
Department of Computing
Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation
Abstract:
The course objectives are to provide students with a working knowledge required to describe digital system
designs in VHDL at behavioural and structural levels; to verify logic system designs via VHDL simulation testbenches
and to implement final digital logic system designs to Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs)
and/or Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs).
Course content:
Digital systems design stages. VHDL language - basic concepts, levels of abstraction, behavioural and structural
level modeling, test benches and verification. Basic VHDL concepts for synthesis to CPLD /FPGA.
Teaching and assessment:
The lecture topics are practically oriented. The practice sessions are focused on the actual design and
implementation of digital devices using up-to-date Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools. Each student gets an
individual course work task, which requires VHDL design capture, synthesis, simulation and implementation of a
digital device. The final mark is a weighted average of four marks: activity during practice sessions, two tests and
implementation of the course work.
3077 Computer Peripherals
Abstract:
The Computer Peripherals course is compulsory for students of CST. Its objective is to introduce the students to
the field of computer peripherals. The lectures include topics on I/O devices, secondary storage devices and
peripheral interfaces.
Course content:
Introduction to computer peripherals. Input Devices. Output Devices. Visualisation Devices. Peripheral Interfaces.
KVM switches. Secondary Storage Devices.
Teaching and assessment:
The lectures are delivered either with a duration of two hours every week or in larger modules. The practice
sessions are two hours each. They are conducted every week. Defended reports for the practice sessions done
and personal assignment report, publicly presented and defended, form student’s portfolio on the subject. The
course finishes with an exam. Students with very good or excellent results from the assessment of their work
done during semester can be released from the exam.
