Course content: The course focuses on the application of teletraffic theory in telecommunications. Teletraffic engineers use their basic knowledge of statistics, the nature of traffic, the practical models, the measurements and simulations to make predictions and to plan telecommunication networks at a minimum total cost. Another aspect that teletraffic engineering covers is the use of these tools and basic knowledge to provide telecommunication at lower cost. Because the approach is so different to different networks, the networks are handled separately: the PSTN, broadband networks, mobile networks, and networks where the possibility of traffic being heavy is more frequent than anticipated. Teaching and assessment: The lectures clarify the theoretic aspect of the topics and provide a sufficient number of examples. This enables the students to prepare in advance for the practice sessions and to work independently during the classes. The practice sessions are held in computer labs. The signals and key processing steps are traced from the information source through the transmitter, channel and ultimately to the information sink. Signal transformations are organized according to the functional classes: formatting and source coding, modulation, channel coding, multiple access, spreading, encryption and synchronization. Course content: Transformation of the signals in digital communication systems. Formatting analog information. Signals and noise in communication systems. Digital modulation and demodulation. Coherent and noncoherent detection. Communication link analysis. Channel coding. Shannon – Hartley capacity theorem. Synchronization of digital communication. Multiplexing and multiple access. Source coding. Differential pulse code modulation. Encryption and decryption. Fading channels. Teaching and assessment: The topics of the lectures enable the students to get acquainted with the main theoretic aspects of digital communication systems before doing the practical exercises. Students investigate the main characteristics of digital signals (BER, MER, carrier/noise, Wrong packets), using the available laboratory installations and measurement instruments. 260
