Abstract:<br />

The objective of the “Design and Architectures of Video Systems” course is to acquaint the students with the<br />

principles and creation of different architectures for CCTV systems. The main characteristics of a CCTV system<br />

development process are being discussed and evaluated.<br />

Course content:<br />

Basic terms and characteristics of a CCTV system. Elements of CCTV systems. Types of architectures for the<br />

design and creation of CCTV systems. IP based digital video surveillance. Main characteristics of the design<br />

process of systems for video surveillance. Software for the management of recordings from IP cameras.<br />

Teaching and assessment:<br />

The topics of the lectures provide the students with the opportunity to get acquainted with the main theoretic<br />

issues of CCTV systems, their main architectures and elements before participating in the practical sessions.<br />

Abstract:<br />

Distributed database system technology is one of the major recent developments in the database systems area.<br />

The “Distributed Databases” course aims at acquainting the students with the principles and practical aspects of<br />

current distributed database systems. Upon completion of this course the students should be able to: understand<br />

the role and importance of distributed DB in a software project; describe issues, principles, methods associated<br />

with distributed DB architectures; undertake the development of a distributed database from a conceptual level,<br />

through logical design, performance analysis, and implementation, providing appropriate query.<br />

Course content:<br />

Introduction into distributed data processing. Distributed DBMS architecture. Distributed database design.<br />

Semantic data control. Query decomposition and data localization. Optimization of distributed queries. Introduction<br />

to transaction management. Distributed DBMS reliability.<br />

Teaching and assessment:<br />

The lecture topics provide the main theoretic aspects of the problems being considered by the course. The<br />

workshops are conducted in a computer lab. The students are expected to independently solve, code and debug,<br />

entirely or partially, defined elements by means of a corresponding programming environment. Students’ work is<br />

evaluated at each workshop session. The exam includes a number of problems with a different degree of difficulty<br />

and a point system for evaluation. The final course mark is formed as an average of the workshops’ mark and the<br />

test mark.<br />
