Abstract:<br />

The course aims to introduce first year students to the current state and trends in the ICT field, as well as to give<br />

basic knowledge and skills for using a PC, working with DOS and Windows applications, the Internet, etc. The<br />

students will need these basic skills in their further education.<br />

Course content:<br />

Structure of a personal computer, motherboard; functions and characteristics of the main modules, computer<br />

periphery; technologies for design of printed circuit boards; basic elements of computer and communications<br />

equipment, connections and markings; MS-DOS operating system; Microsoft Windows operating system;<br />

Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point); telecommunications equipment and technologies (mobile cellular<br />

networks, wireless data transfer technologies); Internet and Internet technologies; browsers.<br />

Teaching and assessment:<br />

Lectures last 2 hours and are delivered during the first eight weeks. The practice sessions are conducted in<br />

specialized labs at the departments of Computer Systems and Telecommunication. The final mark is based on a<br />

mid-term test and a presentation on a specified topic. The test includes theoretical questions and practical tasks.<br />

Abstract:<br />

The Foreign Language Module 1 is aimed at achieving communicative competence in the area of the subject<br />

specialism and the future job. The teaching objectives comprise the development of reading comprehension skills<br />

to handle specialist texts and the acquisition of communication skills to interact successfully in professional<br />

settings and everyday situations.<br />

Course content:<br />

Meeting people. Talking about the present and the past. Plans. Describing objects and places. Comparing things.<br />

Searching for information in catalogues. Linking facts and ideas. Applying for a job. The grammar material is<br />

connected with the lexical topics and situations.<br />

Teaching and assessment:<br />

To acquire the necessary language proficiency and to develop skills in using the language as a means of<br />

communication, a wide range of authentic and specially constructed texts ( i. e. articles, diagrams and tables,<br />

brochures, catalogues, manuals etc.) as well as audio , video, and multimedia materials are used. Students are<br />

offered lessons in computer laboratories, in which multimedia learning packages and on-line materials on the<br />

Internet are used according to the modern trends in foreign language teaching. In class, students participate in<br />

role-plays, pair and group activities and they are encouraged to work on their own on their translation assignment.<br />

Continuous assessment involves at least two written tests and oral testing as well.<br />
