Use Desktop Tools with Care<br />

The past few years we have witnessed an explosion in new tools that can be<br />

downloaded for free and, in many cases, integrated into <strong>the</strong> user's browser or<br />

operating system. The highest profile of <strong>the</strong>se applications was desktop search.<br />

Microsoft, Yahoo, and Ask all have some version of desktop search and <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r smaller companies such as Copernic, X1 Technologies, and Blinkx offering<br />

desktop search technology as well. However, Google's product garnered <strong>the</strong> most<br />

attention and generated <strong>the</strong> greatest controversy. According to Google, its Google<br />

Desktop is an "application that provides full text search over your email, computer<br />

files, music, photos, chats and <strong>web</strong> pages that you've viewed." Google Desktop now<br />

also indexes <strong>the</strong> entire content of PDF files and <strong>the</strong> metadata of multimedia files. In<br />

August 2005 Google introduced Google Desktop 2 in beta and dropped "Search"<br />

from its name because it does much more than just search. According to Google,<br />

"Google Desktop [2.0] doesn't just help you search your computer; it also helps you<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>r new information from <strong>the</strong> <strong>web</strong> with Sidebar, a new desktop feature that shows<br />
