A. Psychology and addiction <strong>–</strong> slash in the<br />

first instance<br />

Many fans cannot remember the first slash fic they ever read; but if<br />

one does not know about the existence <strong>of</strong> slash, and stumbles upon it<br />

accidentally, what kind <strong>of</strong> emotion must that very first piece <strong>of</strong> writing evoke?<br />

Undeniably the effect is very visceral and intense. To <strong>com</strong>e upon slash is not<br />

as difficult as it seems, especially as at this moment in time it is impossible to<br />

do a search in google for the name <strong>of</strong> a specific series or certain books without<br />

a site containing slash/yaoi appearing among the first five links: the Japanese<br />

anime Gundam Wing (USA 2000), the American TV shows Buffy the Vampire<br />

Slayer (1997), and Xena the Warrior Princess or the Harry Potter books<br />

(1998) are only a few examples <strong>of</strong> this. It has not always been <strong>like</strong> that. Only a<br />

few years ago, slash and yaoi sites were less frequent in number, and<br />

slash/yaoi was a lesser visible subpart <strong>of</strong> fandom rather than the<br />

overwhelmingly visible part that it is now.<br />

I cannot recall the first fanfic I ever read, nor how exactly I found my<br />

first yaoi fanfic four years ago. I remember liking a specific anime series very<br />

much (Weiss Kreuz USA 1998), and I remember that the first yaoi fics I ever<br />

read were Weiss Kreuz fics. I suppose that I must have <strong>com</strong>e across these yaoi<br />

fics while researching the series, as I do not recall reading general fanfiction<br />

before I ever read yaoi fic. Soon, I found a link to a page called “AnimeRose’s<br />
