versus rape, both <strong>com</strong>monly used in fics’ headers and warning<br />
categories to indicate that the story below would contain elements or<br />
narratives <strong>of</strong> non-consensual intercourse. The ensuing discussion<br />
demonstrated the lack <strong>of</strong> a <strong>com</strong>mon exact definition: Some fans <strong>com</strong>mented<br />
that “non-con” indicated situations between the two protagonists, in which<br />
one <strong>of</strong> the protagonists is unsure <strong>of</strong> his wishes, and is persuaded to have<br />
sexual intercourse, as opposed to being “raped.” Other fans maintained that<br />
they used “non-con” in the same way they use “rape.” Still others discussed<br />
“non-con” in light <strong>of</strong> the problematic <strong>of</strong> a psychological wish to read rape-fic<br />
and the cultural connotations the term “rape” carries. According to Kielle’s<br />
Fanfiction Glossary, in regards to non-con, “the jury is still out on the shades<br />
<strong>of</strong> meaning here -- some say non-con is just another word for rape, while<br />
others see the two terms as subtly different.”<br />
Shocked? Don’t be. Everything is not light and happiness in fandom.<br />
But <strong>like</strong>wise the Internet is not a den for the depraved. The truth is that there<br />
exist many stories in even more genres, and one will <strong>com</strong>e upon a wide<br />
spectrum <strong>of</strong> happy or scarring fics while working one’s way through a library<br />
that is spatially, and in terms <strong>of</strong> portability, so very different from what we are<br />
used to in real life <strong>of</strong>fline. Rapefic and non-con fics can <strong>com</strong>e to mean a<br />
spectrum <strong>of</strong> things, and the focus <strong>of</strong> the story cannot be derived from the<br />
