will be portrayed as OOC, and a story with these types <strong>of</strong> character may be<br />

very well successful <strong>–</strong> managing to either create a new fanon or fall into an<br />

existing one <strong>–</strong> or may be badly received by other fans. Dinah’s standards are<br />

set very high as she believes these types <strong>of</strong> stories should not happen if the<br />

writer wants to be taken seriously. The problem, for her, lies in the motivation<br />

<strong>of</strong> gaining a large readership; and whether or not this motivation exists is a<br />

moot point for Dinah:<br />

The thing is, you can write for yourself and that’s fine, but<br />

if you post it anywhere, even if you say you write for<br />

yourself, you’re writing for an audience. Once you do that,<br />

you have to see that you’re not just writing for your own<br />

expectations but for others’ expectations. You can’t claim<br />

you’re writing for yourself.<br />

Writing fanfic is anything but simple for her, as this issue creates an<br />

inner conflict within the author; though fanfiction is “writing for wishfulfillment,”<br />

the personal wish-fulfillment may frequently be at odds with<br />

either canon or fanon. Though an author may dream up a story for herself that<br />

is immensely satisfying but OOC and <strong>of</strong>f-canon, and this story may be<br />

perfectly legit, at the same time there is another group <strong>of</strong> authors <strong>who</strong> write<br />

for wish-fulfillment but within the structured realm. Inasmuch as Dinah was<br />

referring to canon as the structured realm, the same thing applies equally to<br />

fanon: a story which resists both structures, and at the same time the various<br />

wish-fulfillments <strong>of</strong> the <strong>com</strong>munities <strong>who</strong> use these structures, can only be<br />

successful if the writing quality is superb. Once it has been accepted as a<br />

successful and good fanfic by other fans, it will <strong>of</strong>ten be re<strong>com</strong>mended as an<br />
