and interact. Mailing lists will have a specific theme, fandom or pairing, and<br />

the authors email is sent directly to other fans’ email inbox. Diaries and<br />

LiveJournals are very interactive online journals, and networked.<br />

Archives are very different; already finished or simple databases into<br />

which creators can input their<br />

works, they are more<br />

impersonal: They usually<br />

involve many authors,<br />

genres, characters and/or<br />

involve different fandoms on the same web space. They will <strong>of</strong>ten carry the<br />

authors’ email contacts, but function in a more passive way, very similar to a<br />

library.<br />

In a way, LiveJournal has moved the concept <strong>of</strong> an online diary from a<br />

private domain published publicly to a tool encouraging networking.<br />

LiveJournal is based on an open source code, a code published publicly and<br />

free to others to experiment with, add on to, or simply utilize. Consequently,<br />

many different journal domains emerged, utilizing the LiveJournal code.<br />

LiveJournal was still seen as the best domain, as it not only is free <strong>of</strong><br />

advertisements, but at that time was also not <strong>com</strong>pletely open to a full public<br />
