I guess for me, fandom means <strong>com</strong>munity. Sometimes<br />
(when it gets big/corrupted) it can be<strong>com</strong>e a negative thing-<br />
->a hierarchal group <strong>of</strong> people with tendencies towards<br />
elitism. Fandom can also be bad because <strong>of</strong> the explosive<br />
tendencies <strong>of</strong> members in discordant fandoms (it's<br />
<strong>com</strong>parable to religious arguments). But I <strong>like</strong> fandoms,<br />
because even with the bad things, I <strong>like</strong> having the base <strong>of</strong><br />
people with shared interests [….] Most <strong>of</strong> the time, I just<br />
enjoy the fruits <strong>of</strong> other's labors (as well as the original<br />
products). If there wasn't such a thing as fandom, though,<br />
I'm not sure that there would be these entertainment<br />
opportunities (b/c I associate fandoms with not just a group<br />
<strong>of</strong> people, but also <strong>of</strong> the products <strong>of</strong> the fans)-->fiction,<br />
art, shrines, etc.<br />
In this post, Yuri approaches many facets, details and issues <strong>of</strong> fandom:<br />
<strong>com</strong>munity, production, consumption, and tensions. She goes on to say that, to<br />
her, fandom is the lifeblood <strong>of</strong> the shows she watches/watched, the<br />
<strong>com</strong>munity and the fruits <strong>of</strong> its labor the thing that would tide her over until<br />
the next Harry Potter book, the next installment by this mangaka (or manga<br />
artist) or <strong>of</strong> that anime series.<br />

Yuri has been playing RP games for a very long time, in all possible<br />
Internet-related ways: bulletin boards, emails, chats or AOL Instant<br />
Messenger, and on LiveJournal. She has quit all <strong>of</strong> her mail-based roleplaying<br />
games hosted on the Yahoo groups mailing list domain, because she was<br />
annoyed at the players <strong>who</strong> participated in these games. When I asked her<br />
whether they were too young (a <strong>com</strong>plaint frequently brought up against<br />
“fangirls”), she replied that that was not necessarily the case, but more so that<br />
