real life, I knew that almost everyone de-lurked at some point, even if they<br />
only meet a few people online, or if only to post a small message or opinion. I<br />
had noticed within myself that over this past year I have grown more<br />
accustomed and open to the notion <strong>of</strong> approaching people online. Since I have<br />
<strong>com</strong>e into fandom around 4-5 years after Barb did, I was curious as to whether<br />
she had established any connections with other fans online. She mentioned<br />
having emailed people a couple <strong>of</strong> times, but not ever having gotten to known<br />
them. Partially, the people she would <strong>like</strong> to know better are BNFs (Big Name<br />
Fans), <strong>who</strong> might be older, or might have been in fandom for a considerably<br />
longer time. To take up contact with such people would be intimidating. As I<br />
wondered whether she felt that she was opening up online a little bit more<br />
since she started having a LiveJournal, she looked very reflective, and stated<br />
that she might have a little bit, but did not know. She mentioned getting to<br />
know her good friend Mary in real life and how that had impacted on her<br />
online: “Like when I met Mary [in real life], I friended her [on LiveJournal],<br />
and suddenly I ended up with eight people on my friends list instead <strong>of</strong> three.”<br />
Fan-mode is certainly a very important mode in Barb’s life, and, as will be<br />
more fully detailed below, is in certain ways her “default” mode as well as a<br />
way to find close <strong>of</strong>fline friends. As we have already seen, it is very possible<br />
for a person to lurk in one fandom, but be active in another; further on we will<br />
