In both cases, fandom brought us together, but it does not<br />

keep us together. Incidentally, both Selene and Anne have<br />

written fanfiction, but I have never read any <strong>of</strong> it...so you<br />

can't say that we are members <strong>of</strong> the same fandom<br />

<strong>com</strong>munity. I keep a private mailing list going that<br />

facilitates contact, but it is isolated from fandoms at large.<br />

Kira describes her relationships with Anne and Selene as resembling real-life<br />

friends more than fandom <strong>com</strong>munity, as she is still in contact with both <strong>of</strong><br />

them, though they do not read the same things. Kira sees fandom relations as<br />

very contrasting to that. She explicates that “if a person loses interest in a<br />

series and ‘falls out’ <strong>of</strong> the fandom, she will probably lose contact with<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>com</strong>munity as well.” I do not believe that connections formed<br />

through the means <strong>of</strong> fandom generally only pertain to that fandom. In other<br />

words, though interaction behaviors and language are very much a function <strong>of</strong><br />

the specific fandom (though never in a vacuum <strong>–</strong> each fan will <strong>of</strong>ten exert and<br />

incorporate behaviors and language from multiple fandoms), the depth <strong>of</strong><br />

connections formed within that fandom is not limited. Fandom-specific<br />

connections that are limited to fandom solely are, I would argue, akin to reallife<br />

business acquaintances.<br />

As mentioned previously, Dinah does not feel as a part <strong>of</strong> the Harry<br />

Potter fandom, though she still continues to write. Partly, she explained that<br />

she has “fallen out <strong>of</strong> fandom, because there is so much canon, and so many<br />

expectations.” I elaborated previously how Dinah’s self-perception <strong>of</strong> being<br />
