which Barb has remarked on in the previous excerpts, <strong>of</strong> the Internet, in that it<br />

was available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, at least in my<br />

school setting. But it is not only this contrast with a library’s regular open and<br />

closed hours, which makes up a different kind <strong>of</strong> accessibility, but also the<br />

lack <strong>of</strong> a “checking out” process, or rather the replacement <strong>of</strong> the same<br />

through a couple <strong>of</strong> clicks. This gave new meaning to the <strong>com</strong>pulsion to read,<br />

as material was available in abundance, need not be processed through a<br />

lengthy procedure worth the mention, and was not bound to a specific location:<br />

wherever there is a <strong>com</strong>puter with an Internet connection, there is a net <strong>of</strong><br />

reading materials.<br />

And so what prompted the motions <strong>of</strong> an addiction (I say motions,<br />

because I do not think it is an addiction as we would <strong>com</strong>monly define it), was<br />

primarily a sense <strong>of</strong> fascination sparked by the texts that I found and their<br />

format, as well as the fascination that I had in the initial source text. But<br />

secondarily, (and longer-lasting than a simple fascination) my addiction was<br />

prompted by the nature <strong>of</strong> the medium through which I accessed these fan<br />

texts. In my own evolution as a fan, this was sparked by yaoi fics <strong>of</strong> a specific<br />

Japanese anime; though I had been a fan before, I could “feed” my fan-mode<br />

even more once I had chanced upon those sites <strong>of</strong> the net dedicated to the<br />

media I was/am a fan <strong>of</strong>. Similarly, for Red this addiction was sparked by<br />

Harry Potter fics specifically. As we talked longer about the subject <strong>of</strong><br />
