public sphere is very distinct: Though some online journals allow for<br />

<strong>com</strong>ments by others online, LiveJournal’s <strong>com</strong>ment function is very distinct<br />

as it operates in threads. The original poster can, thus, engage with some <strong>of</strong><br />

the people <strong>com</strong>menting on her/his post, mimicking a face-to-face or one-onone<br />

interaction. Others may participate in these threads occasionally, but the<br />

<strong>com</strong>ments are clearly a “reply-to” another <strong>com</strong>ment and/or post, and thus to<br />

the person <strong>who</strong> posted that <strong>com</strong>ment/post. Unless “screened” or made<br />

invisible, however, these mimicked face-to-face interactions are clearly visible<br />

to others accessing that page.<br />

As a LiveJournal is still presumed to hold a certain diary or journal<br />

function, the mix <strong>of</strong> private and public connotations may lead to confusions<br />

and may even instigate certain practices. A fic posted on an individual’s<br />

LiveJournal may not receive the same range <strong>of</strong> (<strong>of</strong>ten constructive) critique<br />

that it would receive if posted to an archive or on a personal webpage. This<br />

behavior is sometimes carried over into so-called “<strong>com</strong>munities,” LiveJournal<br />

<strong>com</strong>munity accounts, which allows multiple members entry-posting rights. In<br />

the case <strong>of</strong> these <strong>com</strong>munities other factors may account for the lack <strong>of</strong><br />

critique: the passage <strong>of</strong> time and the purpose <strong>of</strong> the <strong>com</strong>munity. These<br />

<strong>com</strong>munities are, akin to mailing lists, <strong>of</strong>ten centered around a specific theme,<br />

and are utilized for discussion as much as for posting produced texts and art.<br />

Furthermore, as more entries are posted, earlier ones are pushed back and on<br />

to another page as there are only a certain number <strong>of</strong> posts per page, so that in<br />
