Glossary Term Description LEC LNP MBN MEC SPEC NDM NSL number portability NXX OBF ORB PFTP PPP PUC RAID local exchange carrier A company providing local telecommunications transmission and switching services. Originally this term referred to either a BOC or an ITC such as Verizon West 1 or Alltel. These companies are now called ILECs to distinguish them from CLECs. local number portability Permits both ILECs and CLECs to allow customers to take their telephone numbers with them when they exchange carriers in the same geographical region. main billing number Also known as Billing Telephone Number (BTN) Mechanized Interface Specifications, as published by the Order Billing Forum network data mover A transfer protocol most DSET products support. number of secondary lines Enables customers to keep their original telephone number when they change exchange carriers. Refers to a particular set of database tables. The contents of the set are predicated on the owner’s User ID Software Development Kit The name for the communications portal of a trading partner for DSET gateway products. The service center receives communications from CLECs and passes them on for processing and response generation. In some gateways, the service center also transmits communications back to CLECs after processing. The individual or business entity that sells, operates, and maintains the messaging functions for the public. The system operator sells or leases time and resources to this entity. structured query language service request service request confirmation An individual responsible for maintaining a multi-user computer system. Typical duties include: • Adding and configuring new workstations • Setting up user accounts • Administering system security • Installing system-wide software • Performing procedures to prevent viruses from spreading • Allocating mass storage space The system administrator is sometimes called the sysadmin or the systems administrator.
