5.1 Design premises<br />

The design premises for the canister were presented for the first time in RD&D-<strong>Programme</strong> 98<br />

/5-1/ and were established in the overall design premises /5-2/. These serve as a basis for the<br />

work of designing the canister in detail and entail in brief that:<br />

• The canister must withstand all known corrosion processes so that it is expected to remain<br />

intact in the deep repository for at least 100,000 years.<br />

• The canister must be designed to withstand the mechanical stresses that arise in a deep<br />

repository in granitic rock down to a depth of 700 metres.<br />

• The calculated strength of the canister must also take into account the loads that can be<br />

expected during an ice age.<br />

• The surface dose rate on the outside of the canister must not exceed 1 Gy/h.<br />

Conclusions in RD&D 2001 and its review<br />

SKI takes a positive view of the fact that <strong>SKB</strong> has compiled the state of knowledge on copper<br />

corrosion. As SKI has previously stated, the next step must be to apply this knowledge in the<br />

safety assessment and in the work on the design premises, since the reasoning from this work<br />

will result in the determination of the thickness of the copper.<br />

SKI views the ongoing work with the design premises for the repository, and the acceptance<br />

criteria for the canister, as very important. Delays in this work may delay other parts of the<br />

canister work. The design premises should serve as controlling conditions for many activities<br />

and may need to be revised after the consequence analyses that must be performed in order to<br />

show that the design premises and acceptance criteria are adequate.<br />
