"The wise man does not desire so
much to make a living as to make a
life—as the Bible puts it, 'To have
life and to have it more abundantly.' "
This life does not come as a gift. It
is not found in any listless search.
Mere existence is the block of marble
from which the wonderful statue
steps forth, chiseled and polished into
exquisite beauty. Existence is the
raw material, life is the finishedproduct.
Existence might be compared
to the stone and wood, the gold and the one factor that explains nature and
silver, in their nati-ve state, but life history is God, our Creator and
Is the completed temple, the embodiment
of the 'master-builder's vision,
beautiful in its symmetry and color.
evening's prayer-meeting around the
Education is the agent which de'finite petition that God would bless
shapes the human being. It develops
in the soul and body all the perfec
and high schools, that he would
tion of which they are capable. It is
the chisel in the sculptor's hand. It
is the force which builds the temple.
There are certain elements which
are essential in a good education.
I, Vigorous Health.
The only way to influence the brain
is through the nerves and a healthy
nervous system depends on the blood.
Without a vigorous body in which all
the parts are working harmoniously,
the supply of blood will be not only
limited, but of poor quality. Such a
blood supply will not furnish the material
upon which to build a good education.
The men that have influenced
the world because they were men of
force and attainment, have been men
of abundant vitality. They have done
the world's work because they could
stick to their post where more brilliant
but weaker men were compelled
to relax their efforts for the sake of
recuperation.
II. An Abundant Knowledge.
13. Acts 8:18-20. I Cor. 6:19-20.
Education presupposes a general
knowledge such as reading and writing,
some familiarity with history, 1-7. 43:3-6. 63:1-6. 139:1-6.
Psalms—51:7-12. 104:22-26. 143:
science, literature, and art. This
comes through a course of study in
1. To resist temptation. One of
school and college. The young man the purposes of the Holy Spirit is
or woman is fortunate indeed, whose to give strength. Man can not by
mind is stored with the wonderful
facts of nature and history. The his own power withstand the temptations
Botany reveals the wonders of
flowers and plants. Stratford-on-Avon
would be a bore to. anyone who had
never read Shakespeare. What would
the Roman Forum be, but a pile of
rubbish, to the man who never heard
oif Caesar Such an education is
open to all, for the greatest university
is books, and they are accessible
everywhere.
Even more important than knowledge
is the well trained ability to
think carefully and deeply. True education
does not consist in storing
away thousands of facts but in so
moulding the mind by severe discipline
and hard study, that it can collect
the essential facts, form proper conclusions,
and build systems of truth.
The truly educated man is he who
thinks clearly and masterfully.
III. Christian Character.
strength and then you got the victory.
Such was the case with the
Indian elder. The temptation to
return to his tobacco had almost
overcome him. He cried for help,
his prayer was answered, the appe
the gases of the atmosphere for our tite was taken away. We need the Prov. 29:18, we read, "A¥here there
not how strong he may feel, how
well fortified against all evil, the
Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary
for his protection. We have seen
this truth demonstrated again and
again. We do not need to illustrate
it. Just recall your past experience.
Do you remember when you were
trying to break off a certain evil
habit How the temptation came
to you in one way, then in another,
until you were almost distracted and
you said, "there is no use, I must
The Lord has given to
us the easy part, that is to preach.
He has retained the hard part for
himself, to convert. Very often because
we do not see men converted
as the result of our preaching we
blessings so that from it may go influences
When the Lord was about to take
His departure He said to the disciples:
"The Holy Ghost, whom the
Father will send in My name, he
shall teach you all things and bring
all things to your remembrance."
The words axe very important.
"Teach you all things and bring all
things to your remembrance." The
successful teacher or preacher must
be taught by the Spirit of God. The
things he will teach are comprehended
in the "Word." We can not
"Woo is unto m« if I preach not the
gospel." Sometimes it requires a
great deal of courage to preach the
whole gospel. Very frequently we
hear of those who profess to be followers
of • Christ as messengers of
His truth for various reasons witliholding
from the people certain doctrines.
They lack the spirit to give*
them courage and therefore they
cry: "Peace, peace, when there is no
peace." The result is the people
perish for the lack of truth. In
Formerly people thought
meat
necessary for strength and muscular
vigor.
The man who worked hard was
supposed to require meat two or
three times a day. Science has found
out differently.
It is now a common thiag for the
not to acknowledge it." «
