Witness Bearing.
IN CARROLL COLLEGE.
"Waukesha, Wis., is somewhat famous
as a health resort, and also because
it is the seat of Carroll College
with Vernon congregation in the
not as a compensation for the lecttures,
he said, but as a recognition
neighborhood. It may be necessary that they were worth while. I am not
for me to say that I did not go to very well used to things like that,
Waukesha for my health, having all but bear up under them as best I can.
of that article at Bluomingtou tuat
The rest of my time in Wisconsin
I could use. W 1th that out of the
was spent in preaching for the good
way, there remain two good and
people of Vernon and getting acquainted
with them. Mr. Patterson carried
sufficient reasons for a trip to Wisconsin.
iCarroll has had its ups and
away a lot of affection, but they still
have a wealth of it to lavish on some
downs, but since its down were some
good fellow who will hitch up with
story. When I reached Waukesha ou
Monday evening, a Carroll student
met me and took me to the Fountain YOUNGSTOWK. OHIO.
Inn. This is one of the places that
It has been suggested that a congregation
that is not heard from fre-
one would like to stay, but when I
found that Miss Fisher, a daughter of
Rev. John Fisher, who died in York, guently is considered lifeless, but
in 1S40, lived in Waukesha, 1 madt^ such is not the case with our congregation.
We are not only very much
my home with her, while I was ministering
to the needs of Carroll.
alive but are much too busy to do
I found the Carroll students much
to my liking. The school is Presbyterian
and it does seem that the brand ing. We regret that we are obliged
much talking about what we are do
would stand the test under the pure to record the fact that one of onr ^k,-
food law. There is an atmosphere of
orthodoxy around Carroll which seems
to be unusually clear of the bacteria
of unbelief. President Carrier had announced
to his students that I had a
ever, to let them go as heavily laden
dry subject and therefore they were with our good will and wishes as possible,
the usual high standard of influer
so a goodly number of us, dewhich he has set for himself.
prepared for the worst. Perhaps that
was one reason that they appreciated
spite a heavy rain, and carrying with
We want to state that if there s
any signs of moisture in the lectures
any young men who are seeking e
and got in sympathy with me at the us oysters and all the necessary accompaniments,
invaded their home on ers. trained nurses, etc., and w
lecture to get as much sympathy as Tuesday evening and after a pleasant
wish to he in the bounds of a go( 1
hour of games and visiting, we live Covenanter congregation, th
I had won in Carroll in five minutes.
As far as I could judge the two
disposed of the oysters and then bade
me each morning during the the Rambos good-bye, assuring them
Rev. J. M. Johnston, 1023 Hawthorne
street, Youngstown, Ohio.
week, stayed with me to the end. that they would be twice welcome
They had arranged to lengthen the when they come back, which we hope TOPEKA CONGREGATION.
chapel hour hy taking five minutes may be soon. But whatever they may Mrs. Wm. Martin, of Eskridge,
off each recitation period during the
be they will have the best wishes of
Kans., spent a few days in Topeka,
day, which allowed me about thirtyfive
minutes for an hour lecture. I their friends in Youngstown.
daughter, Miss Pearl, worshipped
have learned to expand and contract Miss Anna Johnston made a very with us on Dec. 6.
what I have to say according to circumstances
and specially never to of the pastor, as she was on her way Mr. Knox Carson for his
pleasant visit recently in the home The congregation is indebted to
thoughtful
run overtime. Students never offe."
extra pay for that. President Carrier
had arranged for three lectures, but
after the second lecture he surprised
me by putting the matter of a fourth
lecture before the school. This made
possible the regular course.
A conference hour and an hour
spent with Professor Rogers' class
in Sociology, were among the interesting
things to me. I spent the hour
with the class in tearing the heart
out of materialistic psychology, which
is the condition of the ordinary texthook
on the subject. I sometimes
wonder how it is possible for students
in our colleges to retain their
faith at all after the ordinary textbook
course. When one considO'S
that most of the departments even in
our church colleges are using infidel
text-books, it is not strange that the
Seminaries are not crowded. Perhaps
I should have written atheistic in-
stead of infidel, but the results are
the same.
When the lectures were over. President
Carrier had a little talk with
me about the Covenanter position anil
donated ten dollars for my expenses,
teemed families, that of Mr. Robt.
Rambo, is leaving us for the old home
at Belle Center. We eoncluded, how
Johnston home. After the usual
happy time with games and music, we
were invited into the dining room,
where we were served a most delicious
oyster supper. This part of the
programme was presided over by Miss
Mabel Dickey and it was the unanimous
opinion that in the culinary
line Miss Dickey is second to none.
We enjoyed the visit of these young
people very much and hope they will
come again.
The Ladies' Missionary Society
have set the third Thursday of each
month for a sewing day and have already
enjojyed the hospitality of Mrs.
J. B. Crabbe and .Mrs. W. W. Dickey.
The society also had charge for one
week of the "Sale for the Blind," in
one of our department stores. This is
altogether charity work and was in
charge of ilrs. Foster Reid, and was
very successful.
We are very thankful for, and proud
of our good pastor. Rev. J. iM. Johnston.
We certainly enjoy to the full,
twice each Sabbath, his helpful sermons,
and no one can know better, or
appreciate more his faithfulness in
both his pulpit and pastoral work than
we. We are not exactly jealous of
our Bearr Run brethren and are gl 1
they realize what a blessing is ou
but just to be on the safe side,
have given our pastor instructio
that hereafter, when he goes aw
from home, he is not to quite rea 1
