In addition, some clinical studies involve researchers (such as epidemiologists) at Simon Fraser
University (SFU), UBC, the University of Victoria (UVic), and the B.C. Institute of Technology (BCIT).
Furthermore, although they do not conduct clinical trials themselves, some other PHSA agencies may
coordinate trials within their disease specialties: B.C. Mental Health & Addictions Services, B.C. Transplant
Society, Cardiac Services B.C., Provincial Renal Agency, and Provincial Specialized Perinatal Services.
Clinical Trials Units, Centres, and Study Sites
B.C. has at least 59 clinical trials units (CTUs), centres 5 , study sites, and medical departments 6 that
encourage clinical trials located in the hospitals and agencies listed in Table 1 7 . These are presented
in Figure 1. The classification of the facilities by disease is shown in Figure 2, while a summary of
each entity according to disease area can be found in Table 2. Appendix 1 contains details of each
clinical trials unit, centre, and study site. Extrapolating from the responses of all 18 facilities that were
interviewed in-depth specifically for this report 8 , all 59 units have the capacity and desire to conduct
additional trials.
A number of the facilities included in the listings are not fully fledged CTUs or Clinical Trials Centres.
They generally employ study nurses or coordinators and are supported by one of the Clinical Trials
Support Units described below 9 . In addition, some of the Province’s smaller hospitals, such as Cowichan
District, Langley Memorial, Chilliwack General, Ridge Meadows, and Vernon Jubilee, have individual
investigators who perform clinical trials. These investigators are listed in Appendix 6.
4
Providence is an independent legal entity aligned with VCH for operational purposes.
5
For this report, a Clinical Trials Unit or Clinical Trials Centre has been defined as a cohesive entity with dedicated study nurses and
data managers. It acts as an independent management unit even if it has no dedicated space.
6
Medical departments that support clinical trials are, at the very least, study sites, and are often CTUs.
7
Note that the CTUs, centres, and study sites included here are probably not all-inclusive. The listings contain only those facilities that
the authors were able to discover through extensive searches and discussions with hospital and health authority personnel.
8
These facilities are marked with a • in Table 2.
9
Although many of the facilities provide leadership in clinical trials, the way the data were collected did not generally allow a distinction
between those that provided leadership and those that just provided patients (i.e., were study sites). Thus, for fairness to all the
facilities, none have been tagged as leaders. The details presented in Appendix 1 provide some information of the leadership position
for some centres.
