Being in a study like this may last from days to years. • Observational or descriptive studies include: questionnaires, blood tests, X-rays or other tests, and they may last weeks or even years. HHC undertakes laboratory research usually on samples of human tissue, cells or molecules. The Heart Centre is closely linked with The James Hogg iCAPTURE Centre (see below). HHC partners include: • Provincial Health Services Authority (PHSA) • Providence Heart and Lung Institute • PHSA Cardiac Services • B.C. Children’s Hospital • B.C. Women’s Hospital & Health Centre • B.C. Cardiac Registries • B.C. Transplant • Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) • UBC. The James Hogg iCAPTURE Centre (Imaging, Cell Analysis, and Phenotyping Toward Understanding Responsive, Reparative, Remodelling, and Recombinant Events) at St. Paul’s Hospital, is a UBC Senate-approved research centre supported collaboratively by the Faculty of Medicine of UBC and Providence Health Care. iCAPTURE currently has over 250 personnel working towards solving the problems of heart, lung, and blood vessel diseases. The iCAPTURE Centre is using the best available technology to image and measure changes in molecules, cells, tissues, organs and whole organisms, including patients, in order to understand the link between our genes and environments in causing heart, lung, and blood vessel diseases. The role of inflammation and virus infections in the initiation and progression of disease is a central current of emphasis for the 250 staff of the Centre.

The Centre brings together researchers from the UBC campus and its affiliated academic teaching hospitals as well the BCCA and the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, UVic andSFU. CLH research to improve prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of respiratory and critical care illnesses including lung cancer, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, sleep apnoea, and Tuberculosis. Clinical Trials at the Lung Centre are active in pulmonary research and on-going clinical drug trials. CLH Lung Centre specializes in the treatment of pulmonary conditions such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis, lung cancer, occupational and environmental lung diseases, sarcoidosis, pneumonia, tuberculosis, pulmonary hypertension and interstitial lung disease. PLHC is an academic clinical program dedicated to the care for patients with lung disease. The Pacific Lung Research Centre is part of the PLHC; it is currently conducting studies in various respiratory disease areas, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (bronchitis and emphysema), interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, chronic cough, cystic fibrosis, and asthma. Arthritis Research Centre of Canada (ARC) conducts consumer-driven clinical research and trials related to arthritis diagnosis, prognosis, prevention, care outcomes and quality of life issues. ARC is a patient-oriented research centre, with a wide range of disciplines including rheumatology, rehabilitation science, public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health psychology, health economics and education. ARC work is supported through relationships and partnerships with universities, hospitals, funding agencies, arthritis treatment centres, and both the B.C. and Yukon Division and the National Office of The Arthritis Society. ARC scientists are committed to practical research for everyday living, to reduce the burden of arthritis, and giving people with arthritis better, more timely, and cost-effective solutions for living with their disease.
