IT/ Statistics<br />

<strong>Clinical</strong> trials are conducted at the clinic, which also uses external laboratories, hospitals <strong>and</strong> pharmacies<br />

in its conduct of trials. It has a laboratory at UBC, as well as its own laboratory space.<br />

Quality control/ assurance procedures are based on extensive St<strong>and</strong>ard Operating Procedures <strong>and</strong><br />

Good <strong>Clinical</strong> Practice guidelines of Health Canada <strong>and</strong> the FDA. The unit also provides regular training<br />

sessions for researchers <strong>and</strong> staff members in the conduct of clinical studies. All projects are approved<br />

by the REB prior to initiation.<br />

Diabetes Research Centre<br />

The Diabetes Research Centre (http://diabetesresearch.net/) is located next to VGH.<br />

The Principal Investigator <strong>and</strong> Research Director is Dr. Tom Elliott. His details can be found in Appendix<br />

6. The Centre has five clinical trial coordinators. Studies include the testing of novel drugs in patients<br />

with diabetes, diabetes with or at risk of cardiovascular disease.<br />

Epilepsy Clinic<br />

The VGH Epilepsy Clinic is targeted at adults with epilepsy <strong>and</strong> related disorders (http://vch.eduhealth.<br />

ca/PDFs/FM/FM.470.V279.pdf ). It contains both in-patient <strong>and</strong> out-patient components. Principal Investigators<br />

include the following, whose details can be found in Appendix 6:<br />

Hematology Research <strong>and</strong> <strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Trials</strong> Unit (HRCTU)<br />

The HRCTU is part of the Leukemia/BMT Program of B.C (www.leukemiabmtprogram.org). It conducts<br />

Phases I, II, <strong>and</strong> III clinical trials on all hematologic malignancies <strong>and</strong> also works with stem cells. The Unit<br />

sees approximately 500 new patients each year <strong>and</strong> approximately 100 of these may be suitable for
