Emergency Medicine Research Group St Paul’s Emergency Medicine Research Group is a nationally recognized group of researchers (www. sphemerg.ca/research). Currently led by Dr. Robert Stenstrom, the group is involved in research in infectious diseases (SSTI, Sepsis), Stroke Care, Patient Safety and Medical Decision Making, and Educational Research. Foot and Ankle Clinic Orthopedics Research Group The Foot and Ankle Clinic is based at St Paul’s Hospital (www.bcfootandankle.com/research.htm). The primary research objective of the B.C. Foot and Ankle Clinic Orthopedics Research Group is to better understand the results of the various surgical techniques used to treat a variety of foot and ankle ailments. Heart Centre St. Paul’s Heart Centre (www.heartcentre.ca) provides complete care for British Columbians with all kinds of heart disease. Services include heart disease prevention and reversal, a variety of diagnostic services and a full spectrum of treatment and care, including surgery, transplants and rehabilitation.
CLINICAL TRIALS AND PRECLINICAL INFRASTRUCTURE ASSET MAP 73 The Heart Centre encompasses a number of different groups, of which the following conduct of clinical trials: • The Healthy Heart Program • Interventional Cardiology • Atrial Fibrillation/ Arrythmia Device • Cardiovascular Surgery Research • Heart Failure and Acute Coronary Research Clinical trials include those pertaining to angioplasty and the use of stents, cardiac failure, heart transplant, other heart surgery, prevention of heart disease, and the use of novel drugs. Investigators conduct Phases I, II, and III trials and include those 25 listed below. Hematology Research Group The Hematology Research Group at St. Paul’s Hospital investigates a broad range of blood conditions including both benign and malignant disorders of blood proteins and blood cells (www.providencehealthcare.org/Dept_of_Medicine/researchers.html). Areas of research include: Myelodysplastic Syndromes, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, Lymphoma in HIV patients, Hemophilia and Thrombosis. James Hogg iCAPTURE Centre The iCAPTURE Centre houses over 250 researchers at St. Paul’s Hospital, who conduct research into the mechanisms, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart, blood vessel and lung diseases (www.icapture.ubc.ca). Activities include clinical trials as well as basic and translational research and postdoctoral training.
